The second train convoy carrying Sudanese citizens back to their homeland departed Cairo this week, a vivid symbol of cooperation between Egypt and Sudan. The initiative, organized by Sudan’s Military Industry Corporation with the support of Egyptian authorities, is part of a voluntary return program aimed at easing the hardships of families uprooted by war.

Dozens of families, young and old, gathered at Ramses Station, ready to embark on the long-awaited journey. For many, the decision to return was inspired by improved conditions in parts of Sudan and a deep desire to help rebuild their war-torn communities. Trains were chosen over buses to make the trip more comfortable, particularly for children and the elderly, with the full costs covered by the organizers.

The farewell ceremony was attended by Sudanese and Egyptian officials, along with cultural figures and media outlets, highlighting the depth of bilateral ties. Sudanese Ambassador Lt. Gen. Imad Al-Din Adawi and former Egyptian Ambassador to Sudan Hossam Issa were among those present to see the families off.

In his remarks, Adawi lauded Egypt’s role in hosting Sudanese refugees and stressed that this cooperation reflects not only solidarity in times of crisis but also a joint commitment to Sudan’s reconstruction. He also commended the Military Industry Corporation for its social responsibility efforts in supporting displaced citizens.
