The United Nations General Assembly will open its 80th annual session in New York on September 9, with high-level debates scheduled between September 23 and 27 and the proceedings closing on September 29.

Diplomatic sources confirmed to Sudanhorizon that Sudan’s war will be a central theme at the Assembly, which will also deliberate on global conflicts such as Gaza and Ukraine, along with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, peace and security, nuclear proliferation, climate and environmental challenges, and anti-corruption measures. A dedicated ministerial meeting on Sudan is also planned.

Preparations for Sudan’s participation have been underway for weeks. Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with embassies and other state institutions, have finalized position papers and speeches for the delegation. Although the head of the delegation has not yet been announced, the Sudanese mission in New York has already received numerous requests for bilateral meetings with both state and institutional counterparts.

Observers note that Sudan’s presence this year will attract significant attention, given the deep humanitarian crisis triggered by the RSF’s atrocities, city blockades, and obstruction of aid during a conflict that has now exceeded two years.
