Committee Formed to Review Agriculture and Irrigation Laws in Port Sudan
The Legal Administration in Port Sudan convened a meeting on Thursday of the Committee for the Inventory of Agricultural and Irrigation Law Projects, chaired by Legal Advisor Dr. Sulafa Al-Bayli. The session brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, including representatives from agricultural production, seeds, training, planning, plant protection, NGOs, and horticulture.
During the meeting, Dr. Al-Bayli presented an overview of existing and proposed agricultural and irrigation laws, highlighting their role in achieving food security and regulating agricultural activities. She explained that a ministerial decision had been issued to formally establish the committee tasked with reviewing current law drafts.
She emphasized the importance of updating these laws to reflect changes in international and regional agreements, while also addressing overlaps and contradictions within the current legal framework. According to her, well-structured legislation is essential for managing water and land use, defining property rights, promoting sustainable farming methods, and protecting the environment.
The meeting concluded with the adoption of a phased work plan, starting with the review of five out of a total of twenty-two agricultural and irrigation laws. The process is expected to lay the groundwork for more effective governance of the sector.
