Egypt and Sudan Chart Joint Vision for Post-War Reconstruction
At the second preparatory workshop of the Egyptian–Sudanese Business Forum in Cairo, speakers and participants called for a coordinated framework to rebuild Sudan after years of conflict. Sudanese broadcaster Rasha Al-Rasheed opened the session with an emotional appeal, stressing that reconstruction must go beyond infrastructure to include rebuilding institutions, trust, and human capacity.
Experts outlined the massive scale of economic losses, estimated between $200 and $700 billion, with trade activity halved since the outbreak of war. Hisham Al-Shazly from the University of Khartoum proposed the creation of a National Reconstruction Authority and a $1 billion Reconstruction and Development Fund to manage recovery under a three-phase plan extending to 2035.
Other speakers emphasized the importance of Egypt–Sudan economic integration, highlighting logistical and trade links as the backbone of future growth. Plans include a unified customs system, improved road and rail networks, and joint logistics hubs at Argeen and Wadi Halfa.
The forum concluded that reconstruction must restore governance, production, and confidence rather than only physical structures. Participants underscored Egypt’s role as a strategic partner in guiding Sudan toward recovery, investment, and sustainable development.
