Sudan’s Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation has confirmed that Nile water levels have reached flood stage in six states, warning of further rises this week despite reduced inflows from the Blue Nile.

Volunteer groups reported on social media that several earthen barriers erected by residents in flood-prone areas have collapsed, allowing water to inundate neighborhoods.

According to the ministry, flood levels have been recorded in Blue Nile, Sennar, Gezira, Khartoum, River Nile, and White Nile states. Key measurements include:

  • Sennar (Wad al-Ays): 17.5 meters, just 15 cm below flood stage.
  • Gezira (Wad Madani): 19.91 meters, already at flood level.
  • Khartoum: 17.33 meters, surpassing the 16.5-meter flood threshold.
  • Shendi: 17.96 meters, above the 17.6-meter mark.
  • Atbara: 15.66 meters, nearing its 15.78-meter threshold.
  • Merowe: 18.1 meters, still below its 19.22-meter flood point.
  • Dongola: 14.9 meters, close to the 15.22-meter threshold.

Hydrological data shows declining inflows from the Blue Nile—now at 633 million cubic meters, with output from Roseires Dam reduced to 540 million cubic meters. However, releases from other dams remain high: Sennar (706 million), Jebel Aulia (134 million), and Merowe (750 million cubic meters).

Authorities urged residents along the Nile to remain vigilant and take urgent steps to protect both lives and property as the flood season intensifies.
